The function of a reducer
Since the 1960s, China has successively formulated a series of standards for general-purpose gear reducers. In addition to being manufactured and supplied by original equipment manufacturers, a number of specialized gear reducer producers have also emerged. At present, there are several hundred enterprises nationwide engaged in the production of gear reducers, with an annual output of approximately 250,000 units of general-purpose reducers, thereby contributing to the development of China’s machinery industry.
In the 1960s, most gear reducers were designed based on Soviet technologies from the 1940s and 1950s. Although they were subsequently improved, constrained by the design capabilities, manufacturing processes, and available equipment of the time, their overall performance lagged far behind international standards.
Since the launch of the reform and opening-up policy, China has introduced a number of advanced machining equipment. By importing, assimilating, and applying cutting-edge foreign technologies and research findings, the country has gradually mastered the design and manufacturing techniques for various high-speed and low-speed heavy-duty gear systems. Significant improvements have been achieved in gear materials, heat‑treatment quality, and gear‑manufacturing accuracy. The manufacturing accuracy of standard cylindrical gears has been enhanced, while that of high-speed gears can now be consistently maintained at grades 4–5. Moreover, after adopting hardened tooth surfaces in certain gear reducers, both their size and weight have been markedly reduced, while their load-carrying capacity, service life, and transmission efficiency have all seen substantial increases, thereby playing a crucial role in energy conservation, consumption reduction, and the overall performance upgrade of host machinery.
China has designed and manufactured high-speed gear reducers (speed increasers) with power ratings reaching 42,000 kW and gear peripheral speeds exceeding 150 m/s. However, the technological level of most domestic reducers remains relatively low; outdated models cannot be readily replaced, and it will take a considerable period for new and legacy products to coexist.
There is a wide variety of machinery, with new models constantly emerging. What is the function of a gear reducer? How does it work? Simply put, a reducer is a precision machine designed to lower rotational speed and increase torque. It comes in numerous types and models, each suited to specific applications:
1. While reducing the rotational speed, increase the output torque; the torque output is calculated as the motor’s output multiplied by the reduction ratio, but ensure it does not exceed the reducer’s rated torque.
2. Reducing the speed also reduces the load’s inertia; the reduction in inertia is proportional to the square of the gear ratio. As you can see, most motors have a specified inertia value.
Working principle of a gear reducer
Gear reducers are typically used in low-speed, high-torque drive systems. The motor, internal combustion engine, or other high-speed power source drives a gear with fewer teeth on its input shaft, which meshes with a larger gear on the output shaft to achieve speed reduction. A reducer may also incorporate several pairs of gears operating on the same principle to attain the desired deceleration. The ratio of the number of teeth on the large gear to that on the small gear is known as the gear ratio.
