The RV reducer is a new type of gearbox that has been developed on the basis of the conventional harmonic drive planetary reducer.
The RV reducer is a new type of gearbox developed on the basis of the conventional needle‑planetary reducer. It not only addresses the shortcomings of conventional needle‑planetary reducers but also boasts high transmission efficiency, smooth operation, low noise, a compact structure, light weight, small size, reliable performance, and a wide range of reduction ratios. Its lightweight, streamlined design with a steel housing results in a slim, short profile that occupies significantly less space than traditional planetary reducers, thereby saving installation footprint. Featuring true circular gear profiles with large tooth roots, it offers strong resistance to compressive loads, prevents interference and tooth chipping, and can withstand frequent forward/reverse cycles as well as sudden inertial shocks from abrupt stops. With a double‑row configuration, load is evenly distributed, ensuring mechanical balance; its arc‑tooth gear design minimizes wear and delivers lower noise and temperature rise compared to other reducers. Linear contact transmission yields a low friction coefficient, high efficiency, large output torque, and low inertia, making it a precision, rigid drive system whose motion trajectory closely approximates the ideal operating curve—distinct from certain manufacturers’ cycloidal‑pinwheel or rolling‑element harmonic drive designs. Thanks to an improved design featuring dual conjugate working curves and a flexible shaft‑pin output mechanism, this unit achieves ultra‑high precision, with backlash controllable down to the order of arcseconds. Long‑life grease lubrication ensures maintenance‑free operation, and there are no restrictions on mounting orientation. Human–machine interface options include collet‑type and keyway‑type configurations.
Principle: The RV reducer’s transmission mechanism comprises two stages: a first-stage involute cylindrical gear planetary reduction stage and a second-stage cycloidal pinwheel planetary reduction stage, forming a closed differential gear train, as shown in Figure 2.2. The driving sun gear 1 is connected to the input shaft; when the involute gear 1 rotates clockwise, it drives three planet gears 2, arranged at 120° intervals, to revolve around the central axis of the gear while simultaneously rotating counterclockwise about their own axes. The three crankshafts 3 are rigidly attached to the planet gears 2 and rotate at the same speed. Two cycloidal wheels 4, offset by 180° in phase, are hinged to the three crankshafts and mesh with a fixed needle wheel; as they revolve, they also rotate in the opposite direction—clockwise. The output mechanism (i.e., the carrier) 6 is driven by three pairs of crankshaft support bearings mounted on it, transmitting the rotational vector to the cycloidal wheels at a 1:1 speed ratio.
