How to Select a Gear Reducer
How should a gear reducer be selected? Gear Reducer Selection Manual
Choose a gear ratio as close as possible:
Reduction ratio = servo motor speed / reducer output shaft speed. Torque calculation: To ensure the reducer’s service life, torque calculations are critical, and it is essential to verify that the peak torque value (TP) under acceleration does not exceed the reducer’s maximum allowable load torque.

Gear Application areas of gear reducers
Gear reducers are extensively used in modern machinery, covering virtually all applications that require speed reduction and torque multiplication. Below are some of the key areas where gear reducers are employed:
Industrial production : Gear reducers are widely used in various types of industrial machinery, such as conveyors, paper machines, printing presses, and injection molding machines. By reducing speed and increasing torque, these devices can operate more stably and efficiently.
Transportation In the transportation sector, gear reducers also play a crucial role. In the drive systems of automobiles, trains, ships, and other vehicles, gear reducers are essential for reducing rotational speed and increasing torque to meet operational requirements.
New energy sector With the continuous advancement of new energy technologies, gear reducers are increasingly being employed in wind turbine generators, solar power systems, hydropower units, and other applications. Their use helps enhance energy conversion efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
The applicable power typically corresponds to the rated power of commonly available servo models, and the gearbox offers high compatibility, with a service factor that can be maintained at 1.2 or higher. However, the selection can also be tailored to your specific requirements, primarily based on two key factors:
1. The output shaft diameter of the selected servo motor must not exceed the maximum allowable shaft diameter specified in the table.
2. If torque control is active, the speed can remain within normal operating limits; however, when the servo output is insufficient, current limiting must be implemented on the motor-side drive, or torque protection must be applied to the mechanical shaft.

Types and Characteristics of Gear Reducers
There is a wide variety of gear reducers, which can be classified into several types based on different criteria. According to the transmission type, they include gear reducers, worm‑gear reducers, and planetary gear reducers; according to the number of stages, they are divided into single‑stage and multi‑stage reducers; and based on gear geometry, they comprise cylindrical gear reducers, bevel gear reducers, and bevel–cylindrical gear reducers. Each type of reducer possesses its own distinctive characteristics and advantages.
For example, worm gear reducers feature reverse self-locking and can achieve high reduction ratios, but they are typically bulky and have relatively low transmission efficiency. Planetary gear reducers offer a compact design, minimal backlash, and high precision, though they come at a slightly higher cost. Gear reducers, on the other hand, are small in size, capable of transmitting high torque, and boast high transmission efficiency, making them the most widely used type of reducer in modern machinery.
The selection of a general-purpose reducer involves several steps, including defining the initial design requirements, choosing the appropriate type, and determining the specific model. In comparison, selecting the type is relatively straightforward; the key to correctly and appropriately sizing a general-purpose reducer lies in thoroughly understanding its operating conditions as well as its design, manufacturing, and service characteristics. When choosing the model, it is essential to meet criteria such as strength requirements, thermal equilibrium, and the ability of the shaft extension to withstand radial loads.
1. Reduction ratio = input speed / output speed;
2. Torque Calculation: To ensure the gearbox’s service life, torque calculations are critical, and it is essential to verify that the peak torque value under acceleration (TP) does not exceed the gearbox’s maximum allowable load torque.
3. This reducer boasts high versatility, with a service factor consistently maintained above 1.2; however, the specific selection can also be tailored to meet your particular requirements.
4. The input shaft diameter must not exceed the maximum allowable shaft diameter.
5. Determine the required motor specifications based on the selected machine model, load torque, gear ratio, and output speed.
