What is the difference between a helical bevel gear and a helical worm gear?
Introduction
We know that helical gears include helical bevel gears and helical worm gears. But what exactly is the difference between helical bevel gears and helical worm gears? With such a wide variety of gear types, how can we tell them apart? In this article, we’ll explore the distinctions between helical bevel gears and helical worm gears. Let KONIC GEARBOX walk you through it.
What is a helical worm gear?
Working principle of helical worm and worm gear
The helical worm gear features a compact design that combines the advantages of both helical and worm gears. This combination delivers a high reduction ratio and improved efficiency, while retaining the worm gear assembly’s strong load-carrying capacity. The worm gear serves as a power transmission element, converting rotary motion into linear motion. Bevel gears are used to transmit power between two non-intersecting, roughly perpendicular shafts. Bevel gears are also employed in the differential of a vertical‑axis differential.
S-Series Helical Gear and Worm Gear Reducer
Based on the characteristics of helical worm gears, helical worm gearboxes are widely used in the market. The S-series helical worm gearbox combines helical gears and worm gears, thereby increasing the machine’s torque and efficiency.

Advantages of the S-Series Helical Gear and Worm Gear Reducers
This series of gearboxes offers a comprehensive range of specifications, a wide output speed range, and strong adaptability, and is compatible with multiple mounting methods.
The device’s surface features a textured, embossed design that delivers excellent heat dissipation, superior vibration damping, reduced temperature rise, and low noise levels.
This equipment features excellent sealing performance and strong adaptability to various working environments, enabling continuous operation under harsh conditions such as corrosive and humid settings, while also offering superior corrosion resistance.
This unit features high transmission accuracy and a self-locking function, making it particularly well-suited for applications involving frequent starts. It is compatible with a wide range of gearboxes and motor drives and is designed to operate at a 90-degree transmission angle.
What is a helical bevel gear?
A helical bevel gear is a straight-tooth bevel gear that does not pass through the apex of the cone; its tooth profile corresponds to the crown‑shaped gear produced by the shaping process. Helical bevel gears include spiral bevel gears and orthogonal helical bevel gears.
Helical–bevel gear reducers feature a vertical output, a compact design, and hard‑surface gears that transmit high torque. They offer high gear accuracy, ensuring smooth operation, low noise, and long service life. With strong overload capacity, they can deliver power ratings of 200 kW or more.

What is the difference between a helical bevel gear and a helical worm gear?
First, a worm gear drive is employed to achieve power transmission.
The rotational axis of the worm gear is perpendicular to that of the worm, forming a 90-degree angle, which enables a higher transmission ratio. Moreover, it has a smaller footprint than an intersecting‑axis helical gear set, and the line contact between the meshing teeth is significantly greater than in an intersecting‑axis helical gear arrangement.
Worm gearing is synonymous with helical gear transmission. Because it involves multi-tooth meshing, it offers smooth operation and extremely low noise.
When the lead angle of the worm is smaller than the equivalent friction angle between the meshing gear teeth, the mechanism exhibits self-locking, including reverse self-locking. In other words, only the worm can drive the worm gear, while the worm gear cannot drive the worm. When a self-locking worm‑gear mechanism is installed on large machinery, its reverse self-locking feature provides an important safety safeguard.
