In a helical gear reducer, each shaft is always supported by a thrust bearing.
Helical gearboxes represent an improvement over spur gears, as the increased number of meshing teeth helps to distribute gear errors more evenly. This is a transmission system in which steel helical gears are tightly coupled with folding rollers, offering high reliability. Spur gear drives ensure that no slippage occurs between the folding rollers, thereby achieving more consistent folding.
Helical gearboxes can be either single‑stage or double‑stage. In a single‑stage drive, each shaft is always supported by thrust bearings. Due to friction in the tooth engagement, the external axial thrust acting on the gear shaft under load does not, as in a double‑helical gear set, cause an instantaneous overload of one helix. However, external thrust may have some adverse effects on double‑helical gears, since tooth errors can lead to axial misalignment and offset.

Additional sliding during gear meshing requires extra lubrication and results in lower efficiency. These are compact, heavy-duty gear drives that offer straightforward maintenance and consistently reliable operation. They provide a wide range of speed ratios.
Application
Helical gearboxes are used in some of the most demanding applications and environments across a wide range of industries. They are extensively employed in material handling conveyors, pumps and pumping equipment, agitators and mixers, packaging machinery, and specialized industrial equipment. Cross‑helical drives are utilized in agricultural applications and also find use in the aerospace industry, elevators, and building systems. Helical drives incorporated into brushes deliver uniform power transmission and enhanced safety even under challenging cleaning conditions.
Industrial gearboxes are used across a wide range of small and large industrial applications. Premium Transmission is a leading manufacturer of industrial gearboxes in India. They specialize in producing industrial gearboxes, including helical gearboxes, planetary gearboxes, worm gearboxes, and geared motors.
Helical Gearbox – The teeth of a helical gear are inclined at an angle to the axis. This results in multiple teeth being in contact during operation, enabling the gear to handle higher loads. By distributing the load among the teeth, this configuration also makes helical gears operate more smoothly and quietly than spur gears.

The modular design and structure of helical gearboxes offer numerous engineering and performance advantages, including a high degree of interchangeability among parts and subassemblies. This enables cost-effective manufacturing while maintaining the highest standards of component integrity.
Helical gearboxes are among the most widely used types of gearboxes and are more efficient than any other gearbox. Their design makes many operations more convenient.
Depending on the application requirements of different industries, helical gearboxes come in various improved designs.
Helical gear
Helical gears are gears that are mounted at an angle to the shaft. They can be left-hand or right-hand helixes. A key characteristic of helical gears is their increased surface contact and enhanced load-carrying capacity.
Double helical gear
A double helical gear is a variant of the helical gear, in which two helical faces are positioned adjacent to each other with a gap between them. The helix angle of each face is similar but opposite in direction. Using a pair of double helical gears eliminates axial thrust loads and enables greater tooth overlap and smoother operation.
Like helical gears, double-helical gears are commonly used in enclosed gear drives.
Herringbone gears are similar to double helical gears, but they have no gap between the two helical faces. Herringbone gears are typically smaller and well suited for applications involving high impact and vibration. Due to manufacturing challenges and high costs, herringbone gears are rarely used.
Why use helical gears?
Helical gear reducer
Compared with spur gears, helical gears have a smoother engagement, allowing for quieter and more stable operation.
Helical gears and helical gearboxes are highly durable, making them an ideal choice for high-load applications.
It can transmit motion and power between parallel shafts or at right angles.
Helical gearboxes are the most efficient gearboxes manufactured in the industry, with an efficiency second only to planetary gearboxes, reaching as high as 98%.
Helical gears and helical gearboxes are widely used in a variety of applications.
Helical gearboxes are used in the following industries:
The fertilizer industry, the printing industry, and the earthmoving industry
Steel, rolling mills, power, and port industries
Textile industry, plastics industry, food industry, conveyor belts, elevators, blowers, compressors, the petroleum industry, and cutting machines.
In addition to the aforementioned applications, they can also be used in low-power equipment such as crushers, extruders, coolers, cranes, mixers, and conveyors.
