What type of oil should be used for a harmonic drive reducer?
Lubricant Selection Guide for Harmonic Drive Gearboxes
As an indispensable precision transmission device in the industrial sector, the performance of a harmonic drive reducer is closely linked to the proper selection of lubricants. To ensure stable operation and extend the service life of the reducer, this guide provides a detailed overview of the commonly used lubricant types for harmonic drive reducers and key considerations for their selection.

Common Types of Lubricating Oils
Industrial extreme-pressure gear oils: commonly used under heavy-load conditions, such as grades 70# and 90#. These oils exhibit excellent antioxidant, anti-emulsification, and anti-rust properties, maintaining superior lubrication even under severe operating conditions, thereby enhancing equipment performance and extending service life.
Mechanical lubricating oil: Suitable for routine operations at ambient temperatures, such as grades 40 and 50. Its moderate viscosity ensures smooth transmission operation at room temperature. When selecting, adjust the viscosity grade according to the specific ambient temperature.
Multi-viscosity gear oils: Available in various viscosity grades, including 68#, 100#, 150#, and 320#, to meet the demands of different operating conditions. Higher viscosities are better suited for high-temperature or low-speed applications, while lower viscosities are ideal for low-temperature or high-speed operations.

Turbine oil, such as No. 80, is primarily used in high-speed gearboxes due to its excellent heat resistance and anti‑wear properties. However, it should be noted that this type of oil may not be suitable for gearboxes operating at low speeds.
Selection Criteria
Ambient temperature directly affects the viscosity of lubricating oil. In high-temperature environments, it is recommended to use high-viscosity oil; in low-temperature environments, low-viscosity oil is advised.
Equipment rotational speed: High-speed gearboxes require low-viscosity oils to reduce friction, whereas low-speed gearboxes can use high-viscosity oils to enhance lubrication.
Equipment Load: The greater the load, the higher the performance requirements for the lubricant. Ensure that the selected oil can maintain stable lubrication under high-load conditions.
Precautions
Regular engine oil changes: It is recommended to change the engine oil and flush out the old oil after the transmission has operated for a specified period (e.g., 220 hours) to maintain optimal oil quality.
Change the oil before restarting a parked transmission: For transmissions that have been idle for an extended period, inspect and replace the oil prior to resuming operation to prevent degradation of the lubricant from compromising performance.
Lubricant Performance Check: Before use, ensure the lubricant is clean and free of contaminants, and avoid using corrosive or heavily contaminated oils.
Oil Level Control: When adding oil, ensure the level reaches the specified mark to prevent over- or under-lubrication.
In summary, selecting the appropriate lubricant for a cycloidal gear reducer requires a comprehensive assessment of factors such as ambient temperature, equipment speed, and load. Proper selection and judicious application of lubricant are essential to ensuring the long-term, stable operation of the gearbox.
