S-Series Worm Gear Reducer
- Product Description
-

┃ Advantage
● Cost-effectiveness
● Low noise
● Smooth operation
● High allowable radial load
┃ S Series
Helical gear–worm gear reducers consist of helical gears and worm‑gear drives, resulting in significantly higher efficiency than conventional worm gear reducers. Thanks to their high efficiency, they are well suited for a wide range of industries with specific requirements for torque and speed. The worm‑gear drive’s low noise level further makes it an ideal, cost‑effective drive solution.
┃ We can supply gear reducers in the following specifications:
Base mounting or flange mounting
B5 or B14 flange mounting
Solid shaft or hollow shaft
Hollow shaft: single key, locking disc, spline, TorqLOC ® Hollow shaft
SEW S-Series Worm Gear Reducers
Helical gear–worm gear, with hollow or solid shaft, and mounting options including flange, base‑mounted, or torque arm.

-----------------------------
A worm gear is a screw used to transmit power to a component. When paired with a standard spur gear—also known as a worm wheel—that is arranged perpendicularly and has a slight helix angle, the combination forms a worm‑gear reducer. As the engine or electric motor drives the worm, its helical threads engage with the teeth of the worm wheel, causing it to rotate at the designed reduction ratio while transmitting the load to its output shaft.
A worm gear reducer consists of a worm (a helical gear) and a worm wheel (a bevel gear). The worm serves as the input shaft, while the worm wheel acts as the output shaft. They rotate independently. The input gear rotates perpendicular to the output gear, enabling the worm gear to achieve a high reduction ratio in a single stage.
Energy is transmitted from the worm gear to the worm wheel via sliding motion, which often generates heat, and the duty cycle is typically set quite low. On the other hand, worm gears are generally much quieter than planetary gears.
A higher reduction ratio can be achieved by increasing the circumference of the worm gear or by adding more threads to the worm pinion. Achieving the same reduction ratio with a conventional gear set would require multiple stages of gearing, which would occupy more space. Increasing the number of components raises costs and also increases the risk of component failure.

Compared with traditional gear sets, which are larger in size and higher in maintenance costs, worm gear reducers offer an efficient, space-saving solution for speed reduction and torque multiplication.
The following are some of the key advantages of using worm gears:
High reduction ratio:
Worm gearboxes can significantly reduce speed while correspondingly increasing torque. This makes them well suited for applications that require high torque output and low-speed rotation, such as lifting heavy loads.
Compact Design:
The worm gear reducer features a compact design that saves space and is suitable for installations with limited room. Its right-angle configuration also makes efficient use of space.
Self-locking function:
One of the most notable advantages of a worm gear gearbox is its inherent self-locking feature. When the gearbox is not actively driving a load, it prevents backdriving. This helps hold the load in position without the need for additional brakes or locking mechanisms.
Efficiency:
Although worm gearboxes may have slightly lower mechanical efficiency, they still deliver a reasonable level of efficiency compared with other types of gearboxes. Modern designs and materials have further improved the efficiency of worm gearboxes.
Quiet operation:
Worm gearboxes are renowned for their smooth, quiet operation, making them well-suited for applications where noise reduction is essential.
Versatility:
They are widely used across various industries, ranging from manufacturing and the automotive sector to robotics and material handling.
Durability:
Worm gearboxes are typically used to handle heavy loads and harsh operating conditions. They are highly durable and, with proper lubrication, require virtually no maintenance.
Easy installation:
Installing a worm gear box is relatively straightforward and can be easily integrated into existing machinery and equipment.
Economical and efficient:
Compared with other types of gearboxes, worm‑gear gearboxes are generally more cost‑effective, especially for applications requiring low speed and high torque.
